I am under no delusions about being a “healer”.
A long time ago when Gus’s head shaking was driving both of us nuts and I had exhausted all the remedies I could find, a young animal-knowledgeable woman suggested this treatment.
Desperate (and dare I say, desperate to avoid allopathic medicine), I collected the ingredients and began treatment that same day.
It’s true what it says, “despite the alcohol”, Gus didn’t mind a bit and after his first head-shaking permanently stained my kitchen walls, I did the treatment outside. After two treatments, the head shaking stopped . I carried on though , just as the instructions indicated.
From time to time , Gus would start to shake his head again and that would remind me I had long since stopped the maintenance treatment. We’d begin again and all would be well.
I have shared this with several people, all of whom reported success.
Perhaps it will be the solution you’ve been seeking.
“This formula has been handed down from a wonderful veterinarian, now deceased.
Many have also found it effective for cuts, fungus between toes and small tumor-like cysts, but it must be faithfully done as instructed. I would remind you that ears are very sensitive and your dog may appreciate having it warmed up a bit. I’ve found the best way to warm up the solution is to place it in a cup or glass of warm water for half an hour or so.
BLUE POWER EAR TREATMENT
16 oz Isopropyl Alcohol
4 tablespoons Boric Acid Powder
16 drops Gentian Violet Solution 1%
Mix together in alcohol bottle and shake well. You will also need to shake the solution every time you use it to disperse the Boric Acid Powder. To use, purchase “Clairol” type plastic bottle to dispense solution to affected ears.
( I usually make half of this and I mix it right in the dispensing bottle)
Evaluate condition of ears before treating and if very inflamed and sore, do not attempt to pull hair or clean out at all. Wait until inflammation has subsided which will be about 2 days.
Shake well each time before using. Flood the ear with the solution. Massage gently to the count of 60, wipe with a tissue. Flood again on the first treatment, wipe with tissue, no massage. The dog will shake the excess out which can be wiped with a tissue. The Gentian Violet does stain fabrics ( and white dogs!)
THE SCHEDULE OF TREATMENT IS AS FOLLOWS:
Treat 2x each day for first week to two weeks depending on severity of ears.
Treat 1x a day for next one to two weeks
Treat 1x per month ( or less frequently , depending on dog)
All of these ingredients should be available at a pharmacy. Despite the alcohol, the dog will not object even to the first treatment. The Boric Acid Powder soothes the ears. The Gentian Violet solution is an anti-infection agent.
The solution appears to work on any and all ear problems from mites to ear wax to canker. After the 2nd or 3rd day you can clean out the ear with a cotton ball or your tissue-wrapped finger.
The success rate for this treatment is 95-99%.
Those who do not succeed have usually not done the treatment long enough or have not been regular about it.
Dogs on the verge of ear canal surgery have been returned to normal with only the follow-up treatment to keep the ear healthy. If an infection seems to be remaining in the treated ear after the above course of treatment, the ear may have some Pseudomonias bacteria in the site. This can be eradicated by using a gentle flush of raw apple cider vinegar and warm water. Use 2 tablespoons of the vinegar to 1 cup of water 2x a week.
