Well... it's never too late. It will, however, take a much longer time and much patience persistence to train an older dog. If you decide it is something you want to teach, I can help!

My Sophie is a spaniel-mix and has those long floppy ears that seem to cause frequent ear problems. When she was a young puppy she had to have her ears cleaned out under anasthetic.
She's 4 yrs now and this past year I have used this blue powder ear treatment with success - the first time the ear insides were swollen and red and the solution took away the swelling by the following day and the colour returned to normal too. Kept up the treatment per the instructions. Love this stuff because it works so well.
Sophie's long floppy ears contain any escaping blue solution and then I dry them. All ingredients at my local drugstore and the gentian violet is 'behind the counter'. I do warm it up for her by putting bottle in warm water and shake well before using.

Thank you so much for sending and writing this story about our sweet Tilley. We all enjoyed it. I am trying to copy it to save it but it won't work. Will have to see if I can print it when I get home. She is a gem and I can't wait to see her. Six weeks is too long to be away but she seems to have figured out talking with me on skype.... she has even responded enthusiastically to commands like "wave" and "speak" and looks at me on the screen when I am talking .... I think she is brighter than the average puppy, but maybe I am just a proud mama!! Anyway thank you for this story and again all the love you and the family have given her over the years, she has spent many a very happy day (and weeks) there for sure.... and she still gets very excited when it is a "Doggy Daycare" Day!! xx

As always, Richard,a thoughtful and thought-provoking comment. My intention in teaching puppy manners, is never to have an owner *hold the power* over his canine buddy but I do think all our canine companions need to be well-behaved. Therefore,I think it necessary to teach them manners which indeed, amounts to having control over them. I believe that control to be necessary both for their acceptance in social situations and their safety. As to the bond, I can't imagine why anyone would have a dog if they didn't wish to from a deep and lasting connection with them. I don't know that it's possible to teach that but it would be my hope that this bonding takes place, at least, in part, in the playtimes that I often recommend as the activity to follow a training session.

Hi Jude...just had a thought as I read through your latest great article....as I read it I was getting "mind pictures" of some of my clients or just peiple I see out and about where I take my two angels...seeing them all proudly connanding their charges with a "do this, do that" order, often or even maybe ursually for no explicit purpose other than "showing their dear friend whose boss" or showing others what a competant master they are over their ever-loving, fun-seeking companion. Perhaps all this emphasis on the human getting their "reward" (Ie the dog "obeys" their request for some purposeless (at the time) behavior) acutally gets in the way of the human really making that deep, enduring and meaningful relationship with their dog by lulling them into believing that if their dog "sits or whatever the flavor command of the day is..." then they are their master, by golly!! Perhaps the teaching of all these "cosmetic" commands to people who are leaning to be "leaders of the pack" actually delays or even prevents their ability to recognize their place of truth within themselves thereby rendering it almost impossibe for them to really CONNECT with their dog and have that true leadership experience...you know that place of CONNECTION....How could one teach that??

Thanks,Richard. Your feedback is always appreciated & valued. Like you, I want to get to the place where I am not needed. Therefore, anything I know I choose to share. There's no substitute for the "in person" one on one. For that, there is a charge... $40./hour here on the Coast and $60./hour in Vancouver.
I'm happy if my info is helpful
